FIRST GENERATION

1. George CLENDON (photo) was born in 1760/61 in ? Chatham, Kent, England. He was christened on 20 Feb 1761 in St. Mary's Chatham Kent England. He died on 31 Oct 1839 in Deal, Kent, England. He was buried in St George's, Deal, Kent, England. George was born into poverty. His father Thomas was a porter at Chatham Docks, a horse jockey and a drunkard. As a young boy George ran away to sea. In 1777 he bought a double vault at St. George's Church Deal with Gideon Chitty, who was later to become his father-in-law. George was a Cinque Port Pilot first at Dover and then Deal, in 1819 was holder of a Trinity House Licence. He became prosperous. His will was dated 26 May 1838, proved 4 Feb 1840.

He was married to Elizabeth CHITTY (daughter of Gideon CHITTY and Elizabeth BAYLY) on 22 Jan 1795 in Deal, Kent, England. Elizabeth CHITTY was born in 1773. She was christened on 13 Aug 1773 in Deal, Kent, England. She died on 11 Apr 1858 in Greenwich, London. She was buried in Nunhead Cemetery, Peckham, Surrey, England. Elizabeth's nine children that survived childhood were only together in the same room once, some time in 1815/16. By 1820 her children were scattered, Elizabeth was in Ireland, George was in London, James Reddy was in Calcutta, Thomas was in Bombay, Rebecca was in Yarmouth, England, Sarah Ann was in Walmer, England, John Chitty was in Dover, England and only Louisa and Mary Parson were still at home! Elizabeth was one of seven children. The family tree of her father Gideon Chitty was published in 1974 Erik Chitty, with the assistance of Douglas Clendon & Bette Edwards. George CLENDON and Elizabeth CHITTY had the following children:

child7 vi. Sarah Ann CLENDON (photo) was born on 12 Feb 1807 in Deal, Kent, England. She was baptised on 13 Mar 1807 in Deal, Kent, England. She died in 1902 in Yarmouth, England. Sarah Ann Clendon died a spinster. She kept a "common place book" which furnished many clues to the Clendon genealogy. Died at the home of her Fellows Cousins in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England

child9 viii. Mary Jane CLENDON was born on 25 Nov 1811 in Deal, Kent, England. She was baptised on 30 Nov 1811 in Deal, Kent, England. She died on 10 Feb 1812 in Deal, Kent, England. She was buried on 12 Feb 1812 in Deal, Kent, England.

He was married to Susannah EARLE (daughter of Thomas EARLE) on 26 Dec 1782 in St. Mary's, Dover, Kent, England. Susannah EARLE was buried on 27 Feb 1791 in St. Mary's, Dover, Kent, England. Was a Minor when she married. She was a daughter of Thomas Earle.
Evidently she lost a succession of children over 3 years, George CLENDON and Susannah EARLE had the following children:

child15 iv. George CLENDON was born on 22 May 1787. He was baptised on 23 May 1787 in St Mary's, Dover, Kent, England. He was buried on 13 Jun 1787 in St Mary's, Dover, Kent, England.
